Community groups share experience

Over 40 employees and board members from 26 community development organisations across the Highlands and Islands gathered in Inverness last month.

Hosted by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), they were brought together to share their ambition, successes and issues faced along the way.

A mix of presentations and group discussions focused on topics such as rural housing, asset ownership, volunteering, community engagement and marine tourism.

A number of key regional and national organisations joined HIE’s Strengthening Communities teams.

These included the Scottish Community Development Centre, Volunteer Scotland, Development Trusts Association Scotland, the Highlands Small Communities Housing Trust, Planning Aid Scotland and Highlands and Islands Social Enterprise Zone.

The opportunity for local officers and directors of development trusts from across the region to meet and share their experiences was a valuable element of this event.

Neil Ross, HIE's head of community growth, said: “Communities in the region offer a diverse range of resources, opportunities and skills. We work alongside dynamic rural communities which are at different stages in leading their own development.  Many, however, will have experienced similar challenges and some may be embarking on new projects which another community has successfully achieved.

“All share the same driving ambition to achieve resilience and sustainability for their communities. Bringing these groups together helps to inspire and support the people who are working hard to ensure their communities’ futures.”
