Ann an 2015, stèidhich HIE sgeama taic ’son innleachdas cànain gus maoineachadh a thoirt do ghnìomhachasan is do bhuidhnean san treas roinn ach an tèid beachdan ùra air cleachdadh chànanan is dhualchainntean ann an dòighean innleachdach a thoirt air adhart.

Am measg nan amasan a th’ anns a’ phlana tha: maoin leasachaidh a stèidheachadh a bheir taic do bhathar is do sheirbheisean a bhios a’ dèanamh feum den Ghàidhlig, cànan às an tig iomadach buannachd airson nan seirbheisean sin. Tha a’ Ghàidhlig a’ cur ri eaconamaidh na h-Alba agus thig buannachdan sòisealta bhon chànan cuideachd, agus tha sinn a’ cur fàilte air mar a tha HIE a’ dèanamh sin gu math soilleir sa Phlana Ghàidhlig aca tro na ceumannan pragtaigeach a tha iad a’ gabhail gus a’ Ghàidhlig a thoirt air adhart air feadh na Gàidhealtachd agus nan Eilean.”

HIE publishes renewed Gaelic Plan

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has published its renewed Gaelic Plan.

The Gaelic Plan 2017-22 sets out HIE’s aims and ambitions for Gaelic over the next five years and details how these will be achieved through specific actions.

It builds on progress made on the organisation’s previous plan which covered the period 2012-2016.

Gaelic is fundamental to HIE’s remit for economic and social development in the Highlands and Islands. An important part of the new Plan is to encourage use of the language to add economic and social value in a wide variety of circumstances as demonstrated in the HIE-led research report, Ar Stòras Gàidhlig.

The refreshed Gaelic Plan focuses on a commitment to capitalise on the significant opportunities arising from the language’s potential to contribute to economic growth in the Highlands and Islands.

HIE has a unique remit which integrates economic and community development and the organisation has played a central role in supporting Gaelic development in the region. It has done so in both cultural and economic terms, supporting projects including a range of community development initiatives.

HIE’s focus is on realising the value which Gaelic can bring to our region’s economy.

In 2015, HIE introduced a new language innovation investment fund to support businesses and third sector organisations develop innovative ideas to enhance the use of the region’s indigenous languages and dialects.

Charlotte Wright, Interim Chief Executive at HIE, said: “Our celebrated track record of ground breaking work around Gaelic development goes back 50 years. In the next five years of this plan, we will work with businesses, social enterprises and community organisations that can demonstrate adding value through using Gaelic. This renewed Gaelic Plan aims to further develop and enhance the role that Gaelic plays in creating vibrant, resilient communities and sustainable economic growth.

“We recognise the value of Gaelic and promote that within the organisation. By progressively evolving our services, information, resources and opportunities through the medium of Gaelic, we intend to better serve our Gaelic-speaking customers in their own language.”

Welcoming the news, Bòrd na Gàidhlig Cathraiche (Chair), Allan MacDonald, said: “HIE has reached a significant milestone by publishing the third iteration of their Gaelic language plan.

“Through the dual economic and social development of their remit across the Highlands and Islands, HIE play a key role in deploying the full potential of Gaelic through their support for key enterprise sectors such as the arts, culture, food and drink and tourism.

“HIE along with a number of other partners, including Bòrd na Gàidhlig, published research into Gaelic as a social and economic asset, demonstrating that the language has a potential value of between £81.6m to £148.5m annually for the Scottish economy.  This new iteration of their Gaelic language plan aims to drive the findings of this research forward, including the development of an innovation investment fund to support new products and services which capitalise on using Gaelic as an asset.

“Gaelic adds value to the economic and social wellbeing of Scotland and we welcome the leadership that HIE has shown by ensuring that this is recognised in their Gaelic language plan and through the practical steps they are taking to grow Gaelic across the Highlands and Islands.”
